Ebony

Ebony is often mistaken for grenadilla as it, like ebony, is almost entirely black and heavier than water. Ebony is however slightly softer and more brittle which means that ebony recorders tend to have a strong and dominant sound, yet not as harsh as grenadilla instruments.

The ebony used in my workshop originates in India. The wood comes from the trees, whose leaves are used to roll the thin Indian cigarettes known as "Beedies".

Since ebony is not as flexible as grenadilla, it is also slightly more susceptible to cracking. It is therefore imperative that ebony recorders are not subjected to strong climatic changes. Otherwise this type of material requires little care except for
