Ivory

elfenbein

Ivory was the most luxurious material for recorder makers in earlier days. Exceptionally beautiful show pieces have been crafted from ivory. Today, the supply of ivory is very limited due to trade restrictions for animal protection. In earlier times, ivory was not only used for the making of entire instruments but also, and more often, for decorations of wood instruments which rendered its superb sound qualities meaningless.

During the crafting process, ivory is both very hard and at the same time   smooth beyond comparison. The joys of working with the material are, of course, dampened by our knowledge of the illegal trade and poaching of elephants for supplies.

It is possible to obtain ivory legally in very limited quantities. Since the emergence of high quality alternatives such as artificial ivory or mammoth ivory, actually I not work with ivory.
